Tribute from Julie Young at
May’s Thanksgiving Service
I first met May when she and Denis retired from the Undercliff Christian Hotel and joined our Fellowship here at BBC sixteen years ago. They brought with them a wealth of experience, a great knowledge of life, people and various situations. Denis and May always seemed such a team. They worked together, and had worked together, pastoraly in churches and then latterly at the Undercliff Christian Hotel, where both had shared the responsibility of running the hotel, speaking at the different meetings and services there, and offering spiritual counselling when needed.
When I think of May, I think of a lady with a warm smile and a big heart; a happy lady who always had a kind word and was always interested in other folk's lives. She was very involved here at BBC with ladies meetings, singing in small groups and sometimes with solos, holiday Bible clubs, and of course always at all the meetings and both services every week, always so reliable.
May and I shared three particular things. We had both had involvement previously with the Salvation Army, and both held that very dear in our hearts. We were both baptised on an Easter Sunday, albeit on different years. Our other delight was children, especially babies. May was always interested in the young people of our church and especially the little ones in the crèche. She was especially kind to us as a family when my daughter, Rachel, had her two little girls. How May loved them, and immediately baby sitting was on offer.
May loved her family dearly, which was evident to us all here. She took great pride in her son, Ian, and his wife, Anong, and especially Anita, her granddaughter, being pleased to share with anybody her latest achievements, as only a proud grandma can. May's illness in recent years sometimes robbed her of her sweet personality, and gradually the May I knew was slipping further into another mind set. However, everything was not forgotten. When we went as a Fellowship to sing at Highfield Manor Nursing Home where she was so lovingly cared for, May could be seen, especially in the earlier days, to be singing along, never forgetting the words of the hymns she'd sung all her life.
One thing I know for sure, God was always close by, both to May and to Denis; and now May is perfectly restored and at home with the Lord she loved and served for many years. She is indeed now safe in the arms of her Jesus.
